9.00 Morning coffee, exhibition stands
9.30 Opening words, Annukka Pakarinen, Research director, HAMK University of Applied Sciences
9.45 Key note: Circular Economy and Bioeconomy - Pathway to a Sustainable Future, Mari Pantsar, Kari & Pantsar
The keynote will explore the significance of circular economy and bioeconomy in addressing major crises, along with the opportunities and competitive advantages they offer to businesses using concrete examples. Additionally, it will discuss the necessary collaboration, networks, and ecosystems between businesses and research institutions to effectively advance the transition towards bioeconomy and circular economy.
10.30 What is the role of interregional networks such as the European Innovation Hubs and European universities such as RUN-EU on the partner Regions?, Ricardo Ferreira Simões, Head of Innovation, Norte Region of Portugal (CCDR-N)
Examples of activities which CCDR-N have deployed and foreseen for the future, in which this type of alliances and networking groups can be important, including specific examples of activities and projects which the Norte Region in Portugal is participating.
(Break)
11.10 Matching Stakeholders in Blue Biotech Research, Marco Filipe Loureiro Lemos, Polytechnic University of Leiria, Portugal
11.40 Examples of industrial bio-based side-stream valorization, Ulla Moilanen, HAMK
We develop solutions in collaboration with companies for the valorization of their side-streams such as wood bark, dairy industry effluents or fish processing water. From these we produce natural colorants, drug excipients or bioenergy.
12.00 Lunch & exhibition stands and networking
13.00 What do our regions need to be ready for the future?, Mika Tammilehto, HAMK
13.20 RUN-EU Innovation Hubs, Annukka Pakarinen, HAMK & Ricardo Ferreira Simões, IPCA Portugal
13.45 RUN-EU Doctoral program, Patrick Murray, TUS
14.00 Coffee break & exhibition stands, networking
15.00 Parallel sessions: Meet the Ecosystems SmartBio & SmartBuilt
SmartBio hosted by Annukka Pakarinen
EIP Smart Drinking Bowl (for cows), Olli Koskela, HAMK
At HAMK, we are developing a technology for measuring cow water consumption on an individual level. By monitoring water consumption data, deviations in the well-being of cows at the individual and livestock levels are detected earlier than before.
More productive biogas plants through research collaboration, Antti Myllärinen, Doranova
Biogas production, especially from challenging fractions, is easier to make profitable and functional in Excel than in everyday life. That's why good project planning, input testing and support during operation are vital for operators of biogas plants.
Biotechnology and Business: trends and opportunities for regional entrepreneurship, Julie-Anne Gandier, HAMK
What exactly do Smart Solutions in Biotechnology look like in practise? In this talk, we will provide you with an overview of our current work and vision for the future of biotechnology in Finland's Häme region and beyond.

SmartBuilt hosted by Päivi Laaksonen
Green and sustainable solutions on built environment, Outi Tahvonen, HAMK
Biocolourants – fresh insights to natural colourants, Päivi Laaksonen, HAMK
The lignin-based biomaterials for fire safety, Kalle Lintinen, HAMK
Smart fire safety in sustainable buildings, Zhongcheng Ma, HAMK
Fire safety engineers are facing pressure to reduce carbon emission in response to climate urgency. New materials and uses of buildings put huge challenges on fire safety engineering of sustainable buildings. RIFS project – Risk-informed fire safety of sprinklered sustainable buildings- investigates the effectiveness and efficiency of the sprinkler system in controlling fire from spreading and protecting building structure by computational modelling.
17.00 End of the day
Thursday May 23rd
9.00 Morning coffee & networking
10.00 Opening words, Iivari Kunttu, Leading Research Scientist, HAMK University of Applied Sciences
Smart Food Security, Iivari Kunttu, HAMK
Knowledge of synthetic biology including its applications in cellular agriculture will be integrated within the increased in FoodSec project as contributing to future food security. Cross-cutting themes include digitalized measurements and the analysis of the collected measurement data from the processes related to sustainable food security. The research work conducted in the project is also supported by industrial, academic, and international partners in smart bioeconomy.
10.30 Research funding instruments and support for companies, Tuomo Kauha, ELY Center, Team Finland

13.00-16.00 EPA Mission workshop
RUN-EU EPA Exploratory Missions (EPA-Missions) bring people throughout the alliance together with the aim of co-creating joint learning opportunities for RUN-EU learners. EPA-Mission workshop is an opportunity to participate in knowledge creation teams of educators, researchers, technical staff and students drawn from the diverse career paths of all members of the alliance to co-develop our joint learning portfolio in food and biotechnology.
